The Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara Sierras form an impressive mountainous mass, which separates the provinces of Malaga aud Granada. In the former, this mountain range constitutes the backbone of the Axarquía district; while, for the latter, it provides the beautiful backdrop, providing a colourful contrast to the fertile lands of Alhama. The great natural richness of this territory resulted, in August 1999, in the green light being given to the Natural Resources Arrangement Plan For the Sierras of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara, the first step in the definitive creation of a protected area, and its inclusion in the Andalucía Network of Protected Natural Spaces (RENPA). The creation of what will be the 5th natural park in Granada, and the 3rd in Malaga, should result in an important impulse for slowing down the large-scale emigration from the towns of the region, since this incentive will result in the creation of an increased number of jobs.
 
The Sierras of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara are almost in line with the Picos de Europa, within the symmetry of the Iberian Peninula, and indeed they share a certain similarity, with their sharp ridges and deep valleys sketched on the horizon. The valleys of these mountains are cut through by playful streams, which flow through lands full of history and legends ahout rebellions, smuggling and resistance to the established order. Many of these stories can stil be heard in the towns bordering the park: Alhama de Granada, Arenas del Rey, Jayena and Otivar, in the province of Granada; and Alcaucin, Canillas de Albaida, Canillas de Aceituno, Competa, Frigiliana, Nerja, Salares and Sedella, in the province of Malaga.
The disregard which many of these towns have suffered throughout their history has only favoured the conservation of their landscape, their traditional architecture and their natural places, all of which can now be enjoyed by the visitor. Humming with Morisco and Mozarabic feeling, lanes, arches and towers, in excellent states of conservation, show off their splendour in the rnidst of an authentic natural paradise.
 
Despite having been recently set up, a complete infrastructure already exists in the park for lovers of nature, since numerous restored farmhouses in the zone have provided lodging for many years for the numerous visitors who come to take part in language and ceramics courses, or simply to enjoy walks in the mountains.
