Benidorm -- Monuments
Basilica de Santa Maria, on the ruins of a mosque.
Each year, this Basilica hosts the Mystery of Elche, a fiesta of International Tourist Interest.
It is built on the foundations of the old mosque. Once Jaime I conquered the city, he consecrated the mosque to the Christian faith, dedicating it to Saint Mary. It required remodelling, due to its deteriorated state, and it was rebuilt in the Gothic-Renaissance style, although the current building is Baroque, from the 17th century, when it underwent its final changes. The main front is in the Baroque style, profusely decorated and very beautiful. The San Agatángelo door receives its name from a sculpture by Bussi with the image of this saint, located at the top. The Communion chapel is in the Neoclassic style.
