Traces of prehistoric human society are clearly visible in Portugal’s southernmost region. Begin with a visit to the Neolithic remains of the 4000-year-old Pedra do Alagar dolmen in Ameixial (Loulé), and the Pedras Altas dolmen in Cachopo (Tavira). After that follow a Roman road to Sagres, the departure point for the 15th century saga of the Portuguese Discoveries.

The Romans left many bridges, roads and villas. Discover the ruins of Boca do Rio in Budens, Cerro da Vila in Vilamoura, and the Milreu Roman Villa at Estói.

As well as Moorish castles, the signs of Arab influence are still to be seen in the region’s traditional architecture. It’s not hard to find small groups of houses with white walls and ornamented chimneys. The roof patios and terraces on many houses, perfect in summer, are a throwback to the Moors who reigned over the Algarve for around five centuries.

To all of this cultural heritage you can also add castles, churches and monuments built by Portuguese kings. For evidence of the golden age of the Portuguese Discoveries, be sure to visit Sagres Fortress and the town of Lagos.
