Gandía -- Nature areas
Parque Natural de L'Albufera de Valencia, an old marine gulf.
An old marine gulf, reconverted into a fresh water lake, one of the most important nature reserves in Valencia.
This lake belongs to the List of Wetlands of International Interest (Ramsar Agreement).Besides, it has been declared a ZEPA zone (Special Bird Protection Area). The protected area is La Albufera lagoon, its wetland, and the coast strip or belt (Dehesa del Saler) adjacent to both, that affects part of the townships of Valencia, Alfafar, Sedaví, Catarroja, Massanassa, Albal, Beniparrell, Silla, Sollana, Sueca, Cullera, Albalat de la Ribera, and Algemesí.The shape of the lagoon of La Albufera starts from the subsidence approximately 30 kilometres from the coastline between Valencia and Cullera. The shape of Albufera is irregular, with a diameter of approximately six kilometres at the widest point.Communication between the lagoon and the sea is through channels or passages, that are opened or closed with lock gates modifying the amount of water in the lagoon.'Mata del Fang', 'Mateta de Baix', 'Mata de la barra', 'Mata de L'Antina', 'Mata de San Roc', y 'Mata del Rey' are the six islands in Albufera. In terms of the human population, remains have been found of what is thought to be the original settlers. The inhabitants of the area essentially grow rice, which is closely linked to the survival of Albufera, above all to the struggle to reclaim metres of the surface which translates as extra income for them with each harvest.
The area is characterised by the abundance of pastures and reeds. The water in these areas is a permanent feature and here you can find read mace, cat's-tail, herbs, and giant reeds. The Dehesa del Saler separates the lagoon, or better said the sea, with a strip of sand approximately one kilometre in length. To the south of the Park of Albufera there is another small lagoon, less known, called the Bassa de Sant Llorenç (pool of San Lorenzo), probably the result of closing a small lagoon by the same sandbank that isolated the Albufera of Valencia.
