Heraklion is the biggest city in Crete and the fourth largest in Greece. It climate is warm Mediterranean with mild winters and hot and dry summers. You can use several means of transport in Heraklion. Those who prefer using buses, there are two main bus stations: one near the port and other one at the Chania Gate. You can use taxis at a reasonable price, travel with your own car in ferry from Athens, Thessaloniki, Santorini or Cyclades, or rent a car in Heraklion city center or the airport. There are many car rental companies available in the airport and also in Heraklion city such as Sixt, Europcar, Budget, Avis or Hertz. Some local car hire companies allow one way to Nikolaos, Agios, Rethymno or Chania. If you want to travel to other island with the rental car, ask the company if it is possible to enter the car in a ferry.

Most tourists arrive to Heraklion by plane using Heraklion International Airport, also called Nikos Kazantzakis Airport. This is the second most important airport in Greece. It receives flights from all over the world from airline companies such as Aegean Airlines, Air Berlin, Transavia, Thomas Cook, Vueling, Olympic Airlines, Aeroflot, Easyjet, Monarch, German Wings and Condor.
