La palma -- Gastronomy
La Palma, also known as La Isla Bonita among the local folk, has a great cuisine based on two basic pillars: the sugar-cane plantations and wine, with a tradition that dates from the 16th century.
People from La Palma have a sweet tooth and for this reason the local confectionery is one of the most varied in the Canary Islands. In La Palma we find rapaduras (honey and almond sweet), marquesote (diamond-shaped cake), almond bread, rosquillas (ring-shaped pastry), yam pasties, prickly pear pastries, fresh fig pastries, peach pudding, macaroons, bienmesabe (sweet made with coconut, egg yolks, sugar and muscatel) and egg yolk treats. In most celebrations they serve arrope, a syrup that is made with such care that it is sweeter than any other.
