Palacio Real de la Almudaina - the Royal Citadel of Majorca
Its name means citadel outside the wall. La Almudaina was the seat of the independent kingdom of Majorca during the reigns of Jaime II, Sancho I and Jaime III until, in the time of Pedro IV, it passed to the crown of Aragon. The current castle is the result of the modification of the Muslim citadel, begun in 1281. The building is formed by a large rectangular tower, which housed the King's Palace, the Queen's Palace, a room called the Tinell (or Throne Room), the Royal Chapel and the courtyards. Inside, the decoration with various tapestries and furniture from different historic monuments is outstanding. Nowadays it is used by His Majesty the King as an official residence for official ceremonies during the summer.
