The La Tejeda and la Almijara sierras arose millions of years ago, together with the Penibética range, with which they share certain peculiarities, which will surprise the visitor. These features are provoked by the contrasts between altitude and temperature, as well as closeness to the sea. To the West, the limestone formations of the Sierra de Alhama have turned, through the centuries, into immense subterranean deposits of water. Among the steep slopes of La Tejeda, the Pico de La Maroma (2,065 m.), rises up majestically, the highest peak of the entire range, and the final objective of all the hikers in the region. This magnificent watchtower dominates the municipalities of Alhama de Granada, Arenas del Rey, Jayena, Alcaucin, Solares, Frigiliana, Nerja and other beautiful towns.
One of the best ways to really get to know the richness of these mountains is to take the route which goes from the Robledal farmhouse to the peak of La Maroma. Throughout this energetic excursion, which requires a certain physical fitness, the walker will see, in situ, the treasures hidden by the landscape. At the end of the hike, the panoramic view which can be enjoyed from the peak will amply pay off all the previous efforts.
