Car rental Antequera with Hispacar.com
Antequera is located about fifty kilometers north of Malaga airport. The name of the city derives from the Latin Antikaria (old town), as defined by the Romans.
A rental car is convenient for a day trip to Antequera. Most visitors to the Costa del Sol prefer staying in the hotel reserved at the coast or nearby rather than discovering the rich history of this city, so there are only poor public transportation facilities and infrastructure. Direct connections exist from Malaga only, so first one has to travel from the holiday resort on the coast to Malaga by train, bus or taxi and continue from there by train or regional bus service to Antequera.
Antequera is one of the lesser known tourist destinations of Andalusia. That's a bit strange, because the city has a beautiful historical old city, museums, monasteries, churches and a Moorish fortress (Alcazaba) with its typical walls and watchtowers, dating from the eighth century AD.
In the old town, the Iglesia de San Sebastian with its beautiful bell tower is Antequera's highest church. The Arco de los Gigantes, a triumphal arch from the 16th century, situated close to the Alcazaba, offers a magnificent panoramic view over the surrounding landscape.
The beautiful church Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor has been built behind the Arco de los Gigantes. Antequera's bullfighting arena belongs the most beautiful Plaza de Toros in Spain, according to experts. A bullfighting museum and a restaurant can be found inside the building.
Compared to other cities in the south of Spain, for example Granada or Seville, Antequera is relatively small. Nonetheless, it is advisable to pay the Tourist Office at Plaza de San Sebastian a visit to ensure you're not missing out on any of the intersting sights the city has to offer. The car can be parked safely in the Plaza de Castilla car park; from there, you can continue on foot.
Gourmets should definitely try the traditional Molletes of Antequera, a soft round white bread, served lightly toasted with olive oil, bacon or cheese.
Outside the town, you should not miss the following three sites: El Torcal Natural Park, the dolmens (prehistoric funeral constructions) and the Peña de los Enamorados, a mountain rock near Antequera that dominates the landscape. According to a romantic legend, two young lovers from rival religions jumped off the rock, trying to escape the girl's father Moorish soldiers.
A little bit further away from Antequera there is the saltwater lagoon Fuente de Piedra, home to pink flamingos and other bird species. At the visitors center of Fuente de Piedra there is a spacious car park where you can leave the rental vehicle securely.
