Faro, an ideal holiday destination
Faro is an ideal holiday destination for tourists from Europe to explore the many hidden gems the Algarve has got to offer. Even during the winter season the temperatures are nice and there is plenty of sunshine to enjoy the little towns inland and the beautiful natural areas in this lovely corner of Southern Europe.
Most visitors will arrive at Faro airport, but it is also possible to buy a cheap flight to the airport of Seville in Spain which is only two and a half hours away from Faro in Portugal. At the international airport of Faro you will find a large number of car rental agencies outside the main terminal building. In Seville car hire is less competitive, but it is not difficult either to find a bargain. Make sure to check if you are allowed to travel to Portugal and if a cross border charge applies for this service.
The historical centre of Faro, the Cidade Velha, just off the port is a very well conserved part of the city which clearly shows the influence of the Moors on the architecture in Faro, the gateway to the Algarve. Due to the lack of modern buildings in the old city of Faro a walk through the cobblestone streets is like a journey back in time.
Many parkings in the centre of Faro are payable and it is not easy to find a free parking space near the little bars and restaurants in the Cidade Velha. Parking fees are generally cheap compared to European standards and highly recommended. Most tourist offices where your can get information about Faro are situated close to the public car parks.
Along the Algarve there are plenty of possibilities for daytrips and excursions. Some of the most popular excursions are a visit to the towns of Sagres, Tavira, Silves, Lagos or the nearby Serra de Monchique mountains. The main motorway on the Algarve has been converted into a toll road so make sure to find out if you have to install a special device in case you travel to Faro in your own vehicle.
