Genoa already existed in the pre-Roman times, but the first city walls were built in the 9th century, when the Genoese began to build the basis of their shipping trade. During the imperial period of Caesar, the town was famous as the biggest port of Cisalpine Gaul.
It had been dominated by the Byzantine, then by the Longobards and the Franks and, later, it became one of the Maritime Republics, together with Pisa, Venice and Amalfi. Genoa was also allied with the Church against Frederick II and then it was conquered by Charles VI of France.
It was involved in the Franco-Spanish wars because of its position in the maritime trading and it became part of the Empire built by Napoleon. Finally, the congress of Vienna assigned it to the Savoy family and the town followed the same historical events of Italy. In the 19th century many industrial settlements were built in the same area of the port of Genoa.
