Mallorca - the largest of the Balearic Islands

Majorca (or Mallorca in Spanish) is the biggest of the Balearic Islands. The other islands of the archipelago, which lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the Spanish east coast, are Ibiza and Minorca. Most people will spend their holidays in one of the many resorts on the island which offer an active nightlife. But Mallorca is much more than beaches and clubs. Here are 10 places you should not miss during your holidays on Majorca.

1. The capital city of the Balearic Islands

The city of Palma is the capital of Mallorca and is the cultural and commercial center of the island. The most important monument of the city is the cathedral (La Seu) built on the site of a mosque. Behind the cathedral we find the old city, a maze of narrow streets and little squares, a heritage of the Arab past. At only three kilometers from Palma we find Bellver castle, one of the few circular castles to be found in Europe.

The Soller railway (tren de Soller) is a daily train service which has been running on the island since the beginning of the 20th century. The narrow gauge railway covers the route between Soller and Palma de Mallorca. The attractive route of the Soller railway offers spectacular views of the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range with some of the most beautiful sceneries on the island.

The Serra de Tramuntana is a mountain range situated on the north coast of Majorca. The landscape of the mountain range is very close to the Mediterranean. It is dominated by rugged, abrupt reliefs and a network of streams and torrents which have eroded the predominant limestone rock. The flora and fauna is varied and many of the endemic plants to the island can be found here.

Valldemossa, situated in the Serra de Tramuntana, is one of the prettiest little villages on the island. The village is situated approximately 17 kilometers from the capital of the island and surrounded by hills with typical Mediterranean pine forests. The old Carthusian monastery (Real Cartuja de Valldemossa) from the 13th century is the most important attraction of the village. The composer Frederic Chopin spent the winter of 1839-39 with the French writer George Sand in Valldemossa.

Deià is a charming village on the north coast of Mallorca not far from Valldemossa in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. Robert Graves, the English poet and one of the first foreigners to settle in Deia was inspired by the beautiful natural surroundings of the village and the beautiful view over the Mediterranean. Since then many musicians and artists have been attracted by the idyllic settings converting it into a hideaway for the rich and famous.

The ports and marinas on Mallorca are known for their natural beauty and excellent facilities. Ports can be found all around the island like the bay of Alcudia between Cap de Ferrutx and Cap de Pinar or the bay of Andratx in the southwest corner of the island. Port Soller is an almost circular bay on the northwest coast of Mallorca. Nowadays the ports on Majorca are primarily used for both fishing and leisure.

The presence of windmills on Mallorca dates back to the 17th century. Used by farmers to extract water or to grind grain they can be seen by the dozen and form part of the islands heritage. The Coves del Drach (caves) are four caves located on the east coast of Majorca. Situated not far from Porto Cristo they are without doubt one of the most outstanding tourist attractions of the island. The Lake Martel, which is hidden within the caves is one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world. The Coves dels Hams, located in the same municipality of Manacor, are not as impressive but also worth visiting.

The archipelago of Cabrera is a National Park which lies approximately 10 kilometers from the southern corner of Mallorca. Cabrera consists of twenty small islands, the largest being Isla de Cabrera and Conillera. The majority of the smallest islands and islets cannot be landed. Daytrips are offered to visit the park with boats leaving from the Porto Petro and Colonia de Sant Jordi. It is advisable to book in advance.

Mallorca is a year-round destination. Unlike the hot summer months the winter season is a great time for hikers, bikers and nature lovers. From the end of January until February or early March the almond trees in the valleys between Soller and Palma come into blossom. The millions of almond trees blooming almost at the same time offer an unforgettable sight.
