The Costa Brava

The beautiful coastline of Girona

The strategic location of Girona, nestled in between the Pyrenes chain and flanked by the Mediterranean, has definitely worked to the benefit of the city. Visitors can travel from one end of the city to the other without too much trouble and discover the distinctive flavors of the historical and modern centers of Girona, across its geographical divisions.

The monumental coastline of Girona which starts in the north at Portbou and runs along to Blanes in the south is composed of wide beaches, glorious coves, crystal clear water, roman remains, monumental churches and quaint fishing villages. All along the perpetual juxtaposition of the mountain ranges forms a lingering topographical feature.

Upon arrival at the airport, make sure to Girona and visit local attractions like the serene monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, the verdant Cap de Creus Natural park, El Port de la Selva and the stunning landscapes of the gulf of roses and Cadaqués.

The city also abounds in historical attractions like the walled town side of Tossa del Mer and the artistic Pals. The summits and valleys of the Pyrenes are a natural wonderland that simply should not be missed. The fast flowing rivers that traverse across the ranges and the gorgeous landscape are complimented by medieval structures like the Sant Joan de les Abadesses and Puigcerdá.

The mountains are also home to picturesque villages known for their architectural offerings like the Queralbs, Masella and La Molina.  These are ski stations that provide the best in European winter adventure sports and offer all kind of information about Girona if you plan to go skiing in the Pyrenees. In fact, they are often frequented by visitors looking for varying levels of skiing and snowboarding programs.

The valleys of Núria and Ribes are particularly popular with tourists and locals alike for their stunning mountainous landscape. In fact, the sheer natural beauty of the area has allowed for the creation of several natural parks in the city. Among the most significant of these protected reserves are the La Garoxta Volcanic area and the Empordà wetlands.

Sporting diverse ecosystems, these natural parks highlight the diversity of the Catalan province. Information centers have been set up at all natural parks which makes it easier to explore them.
