Lisbon, a popular city break destination
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is built on seven hills, like Rome in Italy or San Francisco in the United States of America. Lisboa, perched on the corner of the Atlantic Ocean, has become one of Europe's most popular city break destinations in recent years. The Atlantic climate with relatively warm summers and mild winters, the white bleached houses, the little cobblestone streets and alleys and the local people from Lisbon are the main reasons why it has become so popular and travellers ask about information about Lisbon city break's.
The city is very well connected by plane with other capitals in Europe and many low cost airlines offer cheap tickets to Lisbon da Portela airport, the main hub for the national airline TAP and located between Lisboa and Loures. Some airlines flying into Lisbon are Air Berlin, Easyjet, Germanwings, Transavia, Swiss or Vueling. Getting a bus, a taxi , the metro or a rent a car into town is easy, especially if it is not late in the evening or you are not carrying many suitcases.
Stretched along the Tajo river the city lacks a clearly defined city centre. Because the city is built on hills steep streets or stairways can be found once the grounds start to rise away from the coastline and the banks of the Tajo. Many of the major attractions in Lisbon like the Bairro Alto, the Castelo or the Alfama district are within walking distance of the lower part of town called Baixa.
That is why walking is a perfect option to go sightseeing in Lisboa, especially if your hotel is situated in the city centre. Tourists can also purchase the Lisboa Card at the tourist information offices. Free use of public transportation is included in the card and many other tourist attractions offer reduced entrance fees for car holders.
Free public transport also includes the use of some of the funiculars, elevators and even some ferries which connect the suburbs across the river Tajo with the lower part of Lisbon.
