Malaga, gateway to the Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol is a popular holiday destination for tourists from all over Europe. The coastline stretches along the Mediterranean Sea in the southernmost part of Spain. The Costa del Sol can be divided into the western part and the eastern part. The Western Costa del Sol stretches for some hundred kilometres to the west of the city of Malaga. The most important tourist resorts in this area are Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella and Estepona.
The Eastern Costa del Sol is about 50 kilometres long and stretches from Malaga all the way to Nerja. Other travel destinations along this part of the coast are Rincón de la Victoria and Torrox.
The mountain area inland of the eastern part of the Mediterranean Coast, the Axarquia, is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. The Axarquia offers a lot of rural accommodations and typical andalusian cottages in white villages like Frigiliana, Competa, Arenas, Comares, Periana o Viñuela. There are a number of tourist information points available in the area.
On the west we can also find some beautiful natural spots like the Montes de Malaga, the Sierra de las Nieves or the Serrania de Ronda. Typical Andalucian villages in this area are Cortes de la Frontera, Gaucin, Algatocin, Jubrique or Montejaque. The Alcornocales National Park, a beautiful area full of oak trees is shared with the province of Cadiz. The Grazalema Natural Park, one of the most humid regions in Andalusia is famous for its pinsapo forests.
However visitors to the Costa del Sol not only come for the sun, the sea, the charming villages and the beautiful landscapes, because the coastline of Malaga offers a lot more: you can enjoy all kind of sports, from golf, horse riding, polo, sailing, windsurfing to skiing in the nearby Sierra Nevada. The gastronomy of Malaga is spectacular with hundreds of restaurants and tapa bars to choose from.
