The Principality of Asturias lies in the northeast of Spain. The coast bathes in the Cantabrian sea and the region is home to the highest parts of the Cantabrian mountain range.

Construction of the main monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of Asturias began in the early 8th century and continued throughout the whole of the 9th century.
In the eastern part of Asturias is the Muniellos Biosphere Reserve, the territory of which was recently expanded to include the upper courses of the rivers Narceo, Degaña and Ibias. This mountainous landscape contains the biggest oak forest of the peninsula and one of the best-kept in Europe.
