Outdoor activities on the Canary Islands
The island of Tenerife is a popular destination for tourists looking for a beach holiday. But the largest of the Canary Islands has much more to offer, it is also an ideal destination for adventure sports and outdoor activities.
Since this is island in the Atlantic Ocean the range of water sports and activities related with the sea is extensive. The visibility underwater is good and the water temperature ranges between 18 and 25 degrees, ideal conditions for activities like scuba diving, deep sea fishing, sea kayaking, sailing and windsurfing all year round.
There are several sailing schools based at the main marinas on the island. The Medano Beach in the south of the island is one of the best places in Tenerife for kite surfing.
The island offers many splendid natural sites for outdoor sports like Teno Rural Park, which includes the towns of Santiago del Teide, El Tanque, Buenavista and Silos or Anaga rural park which is not far from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de Laguna.
Due to the excellent climate of Tenerife tourists can practice sports like cycling, paragliding, canyoning, rappelling and climbing throughout the year.
Hikers will find a wide network of trails across the island which run through beautiful places like the Malpais de Guimar, the Barranco del Infierno in Adeje, the Orotava Valley, or the cliffs of Los Gigantes, one of the Tenerife's most spectacular landscapes. Not to mention the jewel of the island, the National Park Cañadas del Teide.
